When it comes to those who've changed the world, I think of....
They are the individuals who became world class in their chosen field. It wasn’t (necessarily or always) through extraordinary talent or having natural gifts that are only bestowed on those select few.
They decided to play THEIR game differently to everyone else. They weren’t satisfied with accepting the norm. They saw things differently. They created genius. They worked their arses off. They were relentless and had a monomaniacal obsession. They dismissed the dogma of those around them. They decided to NEVER play to the gallery.
Let’s dig into it….
The ridiculous proliferation and unhealthy obsession with social media has brought to the fore ‘the constant and incessant need for external validation’. You know exactly what I mean.
Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and the like…. people from all walks of life posting crap to perhaps make their lives appear better than the reality. They’re constantly looking for reassurance that what they are doing is ‘okay’. They’re conforming to a way of life that allows them to be part of the ‘in-crowd’.
WTF…. Why would anyone do this?
Because the social media giants know exactly what they’re doing. For every like or retweet that you get for the garbage you posted, you get a nice little dopamine hit (that’s the happy brain hormone).
Why focus on what you really want to do to create your genius when you’re getting perpetual ‘hits’ from the infamous like button? Your focus is on what gets you the ‘hits’ not what helps you create genius.
Not an easy cycle to get out of.
And there's no point in trying to say it any better...
“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.”
Do you ever actually spend the time to think and create the work you believe in and are literally obsessed about?
The stuff that makes us who we truly are.
The stuff that we truly love.
The stuff that differentiates us from the crowd.
Don’t you think you should stop doing the shit that makes other people happy….. T
he stuff that helps us conform to our social environment..
Because to be candid…
Making others happy at our expense is literally the antithesis of being authentic (most overused and overhyped phrase of the social media world — perhaps?)
Think David Bowie.
Watch this 1 minute video…..
We all do it.
Why are we wasting our lives and hiding our genius within us? Is it….
- Lack of self-esteem?
- Lack of self-belief?
- Low confidence?
- Afraid of being ridiculed?
Or perhaps a combination, or all, of the above (?) I think so.
It’s EASY to conform.
It’s what we’re conditioned to do from an early age – live the life defined by other people’s beliefs.
Few have the heart to stand apart. But genius – where you create the magic – can only be captured in only one place. It’s where two completely different worlds collide – the edge of your comfort zone vs. the unknown.
As Bowie said….
It’s when you start to leave the edge of the comfort zone
It’s when you step out into the deeper water
It’s when you start taking the risks that are required for you to grow and evolve…
That’s when the genius kicks-in.
And the same will be true for you.
We’re not on this earth to serve people what they WANT.
We’re not on this earth to serve people what they think they NEED.
I believe that we’re here to deliver to the world the genius that we, and ONLY we, can bring. And the truth is my friend, the crowd in the gallery (yes, I mean your social environment) have NO bloody idea what your genius is.
ONLY you know.
So stop playing to the gallery. Obsess about what you believe in. Make mistakes along the way. And create the genius that only you can give.
Please.... send me an email and let me know why you’re playing to the gallery and what you’re going to do differently to create your genius.
